The Revival of the Religious Sciences is divided into four parts, each containing ten chapters. Part one deals with knowledge and the requirements of faith—ritual purity, prayer, charity, fasting, pilgrimage, recitation of the Qurʾān, and so forth; part two concentrates on people and society—the manners related to eating, marriage, earning a living, and friendship; parts three and four are dedicated to the inner life of the soul and discuss first the vices that people must overcome in themselves and then the virtues that they must strive to achieve. Summary by Aḥmad al-Ghazālī (pdf) Lubab al-iḥyāʾ, published here as Mukhtaṣar Iḥyāʾ ʿulūm al-dīn. The publisher claims that it is by Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī, though I believe this is incorrect (PDF) The Iḥyāʾ was summarized in a book entitled Minhaj al-qaṣidīn by Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597 AH/1201 CE), which was further summarized inMukhtaṣar minhaj al-qaṣidin by Ibn Qudāma al-Maqdisī (d. 620 AH/1341 CE). COMMENTARY: one commentary (sharḥ) of al-Iḥyaʾ exists by Murtaḍā al-Zabīdī's [d. 1791] Itḥaf al-sada al-muttaqīn bi sharḥ iḥyāʾ ʿulum al-dīn. Cairo 1894 in 10 large volumes (Sample extract introduction PDF). This work is still in print in facsimiles of this edition as well as well as a newly re-typeset edition. Note that the link provided is for the complete 1894 edition. Defense: As many were critical of al-Ghazālī there were as many if not more who rallied to his defense: In his own defense, al-Ghazālī wrote: al-Imlāʾ fī ishkalat al-iḥyāʾ (Notes on issues of the Iḥyāʾ) printed as an appendix in some editions of the Iḥyāʾ (pdf) ʿAbd al-Qādir al-ʿAydrūs, Taʿarif al-aḥyāʾ bi faḍʾil al-iḥyāʾ (Introducing the living to the benefits of the Iḥyāʾ) printed as an appendix in some editions of the Iḥyāʾ (pdf). Note the pun in the title, which is, of course, intentional. al-Suyūṭī, Tashyad al-ʾarkan fī "laysa min al-imkan ʾabdaʿ min maʾ kān (Fortifying the foundations of [the statement] "the best of all possible worlds" ) printed as an appendix in some editions of the Iḥyāʾ (PDF). Note also this was part of a study done in Theodicy in Islamic Thought: The Dispute over Al-Ghazālī's "Best of All Possible Worlds" by Eric L. Ormsby (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1984). Unknown author: Risala fi bayan faḍil iḥyāʾ ʿulum al-dīn (mss in al-Azhar number 1956 [majami 91] folios 76-86). Unknown author: Risala fi al-rad ʿala min ʿatraḍa ʿala al-ghazālī fi qawlihi ana al-musabibat ratabat ʿala al-ʾasbab (mss in Dar al-Kutub al-misriyya [majami 210]) Refutations: This work has generated some heated discussions mostly revolving around the traditions that al-Ghazālī included here but also about some of his statements. Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597 AH) iʿlam al-aḥyaʾ bi aghlat al-iḥyāʾ (not printed and no known mss copies) al-Dhahabi mentioned that Abū al-Ḥasan b. Sukar wrote Iḥyāʾ mayit al-aḥya fi al-rad ʿala kitab al-iḥyāʾ (not printed and no known mss copies) Aḥmad b. Munir al-Iskandarī (d. 1284) wrote al-Ḍiyaʾal-mutalali fi taʿqub al-iḥyāʾ lil ghazālī as mentioned by Zabīdī (in commentary above) vol. 1. p .33, ln 10) (not printed and no known mss copies) A Shiʿa 'recension': under the title: al-Maḥajjah al-bayḍā' fī tahdhīb al-Iḥyāʾ by Muḥammad b. al-Murtaḍa al-madʿū bi-al-Mawla Muḥsin al-Kāshānī (d. 1681) (sample PDF) Fatawas (judicial decrees) by scholars and these are too many list or know but Ibn Taymiyya is known to have written one as well as al-Ṭarṭushi. Even in modern times there have been fatwās issued by Saudi ʿulamāʾ. A typical critique along those lines is by ʿA. R. Dimashqīya:PDF. Miscellaneous: List of Personalities mentioned in the Iḥyāʾ. The one who does the istikhara is as if they request Allah Almighty that, O the Knower of Unseen (Exalted is He) guide me if this task is better for me or not? Hazrat Maulana Fazl-E-Rehman Gujmuradabadi(rehmatullah) has said : start istekhara with reading  awaal akhir(before and after) durood sharif 7 times then read sureah fateha 7 times with "Bismillaah hir rehman nir rahim" in the start of sureah fateha, then read " Ya alemo ilamni Ya khabiro akhbirni"  25 times and go to sleep without talking to any one u will get ur answer with in 3-5 days do every day till u get ur answer. If u see green or white light means it is a go head but if u see red or black colour means that dont go for that thing.   FORGIVNESS FOR SIN: Hazrat Maulana Fazl-E-Rehman Gujmuradabadi(rehmatullah alaih) has said that it is written by Hazrat Mohammed Murashi(rehmatullah alaih) that who ever read "subhan lal laahe wabe hamdehi subhan lal laheil azeem" 100 times with awwal akhir durood sharif  5 times will be forgiven even if he has commited sin upto the level of sea. Later Hazrat Maulana Fazl-E-Rehman Gujmuradabadi(rehmatullah alaih) added that he had recived this following wazaif from Hazrat Baba Farid Shakarganj(rehmatullah alaih) who ever after fajar read 4th kalma 100 times with awwal akhir darood sharif 7 times Allah will make him Prosperous (ghani karega). Hazrat Maulana Fazl-E-Rehman Gujmuradabadi(rehmatullah alaih) also said that it is written by Hazrat Ins (RadiAllaho anhu) who ever read "Kul Wala Sharif" surah Ikhlas200 times with full heart Allah forgives his sin of 50 years, Our holy prophet(sal-lal-laho-tala-alaihi-wasalm) has said that reading "Lahula Wala Kuwata illa Billa Hil Aliul Azeem" helps in getting rid of 99 problems and (tangdasti) poverty, the smallest problem for which u will get relife is any kind of sorrow, pain & grief. Hazrat Khwaja Baktiyar Kakhi(rehmatullah alahi) has said that who ever read "Lahula Wala Kuwata illa Billa Hil Aliul Azeem" 100 times in the morning and evening, Allah will make him Prosperous(ghani) and he will recive gaibi imdad (help from unkown resources).   KHAZANA-E-MAGFIRAT: After Every Namaz read "Ayatal Kursi" 1 time, 4th Kalma 10 times, and "Astagfirullah 10 times. The word 'Astaghfirullah' is understood and realized in a significant manner by seekers of Truth. Litreally it means "I seek forgiveness from God" or "I ask God's forgivness". People of submission to God recite this term as its instructed in the Holy Book."And seek the forgiveness of God. Certainly, God is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.'' (The Quran 4:106)Although the outward meaning is seeking forgiveness, but the inward meaning is much much powerful than it can be perceived initially. In The Meaning of Astaghfirullah and Using it to Get Closer to Allah, Ibrahim Hakim says:“The root word of astaghfirullah is ‘ghafara,’ which carries the same meaning of the Arabic root ‘satara,’ meaning: ‘to cover over.’ Therefore, the meaning of the phrase Astaghfirullah is: “I seek the covering of God’s Attributes.””the phrase can be understood in its inner meaning to be about God’s mercy cleaning us inwardly in the same way that ablutions (daily baptism performed by muslims) are used to cleanse us outwardly. it is not only asking forgiveness, but to be conscious of the potential to cover our imperfection by God's perfect attributes. asking forgivenss is only the passive part of it, but to strive to do away with our imperfection with God's perfect and pure attributes is the active part of Astaghfirullah.Prophet Muhammad, the pinnacle of conscious human-being used to repeat this word many times everyday to realign his consciousness. Although being a person of great enlightenment who was free from error, it was this active part which he intended.Al-Agharr Al-Muzani said: The Messenger of God said, "Sometimes I perceive a veil over my heart, and I supplicate God for forgiveness a hundred times in a day.'' (narrated in Muslim collection of tradition)The Quran also hints on this: "Indeed those who are in awe of God (taqwa), when a passing insinuation (taif) from Maya (illusion, false, shaytan) veils them, they bring to remembrance (tadhakkaru), and behold, they see clearly" (The Quran 7:201)."And declare the freedom of your Lord from imperfection beginning with His praise, and ask His forgiveness. Verily, He is the One Who accepts the repentance and Who forgives.'' (The Quran 110:3)Astaghfirullah is a very dear mantra for the sufis, the seekers of path. many remembrace circle of God begins or ends with this powerful word.Reference: Gurdjieff Dominican Group / Seeking forgiveness"Your attaining to (proximity with) God really means attaining to direct knowledge of Him. Otherwise, far exalted is He above being united with anything or anything being united with Him!" -Imam Ibn 'Ata'Illah, from the Hikam

My parents be sacrificed upon you, Who is that whom Almighty Allah created before anything? The beloved Prophet Muhammad (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) stated, "O Jaabir (radi Allahu anhu)! Verily, before the creation of anything else, Almighty Allah created the Noor of your Nabi (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam)from His Noor." (Zirkaani) Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari (radi Allahu anhu) reports: I asked: "O Prophet of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), What did the Almighty Allah first create?" The Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) replied:"Allah first created my Noor (Light) of His Noor. This Noor travelled about according to the Will of Allah. At that time, there was no Heaven, Hell, Lawh (Divine Tablet), Pen, Earth, Skies, Sun, Moon, Jinn or Human Beings. When He decided to create, He divided that Noor into four parts. From one part He created the Pen, from the second, the Lawh and from the third, he made the Arsh (Throne)."He divided the fourth part into a further four parts. From one, He created those Angels who carry the Arsh, from the second, the Kursi (Divine Chair) and from the third, He created the Angels."He again divided the remaining parts into a further four parts. From one, He created the skies. The second was used in creating the planets. From the third, Heaven and Earth were created."Once again, He divided the fourth part into a further four parts. From one part He created the power with which the believers see. From the second, He created in the hearts of the Believers the Noor of Marifat. From the third, He created in the tongues of the Believers, Noor, so that they can read the Kalima of Tauheed". (Dalaa'il-un-Nubuwwat, Imam Baihaqi) Hadrat Ghouz al- Azam, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani Radi Allahu anhu in his book( Sirrul-asraar feemaa Yahtaaju illahil Abrrar ) has said:" Now that since Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala first created the soul of Muhammad Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam from the Light of His beauty as He said: "I created Muhammad Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallamfrom the light of My face" and as the Beloved Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam said; " The first thing Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'alaCcreated is my Soul and the first thing Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala Created is this pen and the first thing Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'alaCreated is the intellect." What is meant by all this, is, it is one and the same thing, and that is the [i]'Haqeeqa Muhammadiyya'[/i]. However, it ws named a Light because it is completely Purified from darkness, as Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala said;"There has come to you from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala a Light and a manifest book ."It was also named intellect because it is the cause for the transmission of knowledge, and the pen it its medium in the world of letters. The Muhammad Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam soul (ar-Rooh al- Muhammadiyya) is therefore the quintessence of all created things and the first of them and their origin, as the Beloved Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam said;" I am from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and the belivers are from me, and Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala created all souls from me in the spritual world, and He did so in the best form. It is the name of totality of mankind in that primmordial world, and after its creation by four thousand years, AllahSubhanahu wa Ta'ala Created the Throne from the Light of Muhammad Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallamhimself and from it the rest of Creation.   2) It is on the authority of Hazrat Abu Moosa Ash’ari (radi Allahu anhu) that the beloved Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) said, “I am Muhammad and Ahmed and I am the one who came after all the Prophets (Khaatimun Nabiyeen) and I am the one who will give Hashr to the creation (in other words all will be present before the Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) on Maidaan-e-Hashr) and I am the Prophet of Mercy.” (Musnad Imam Ahmed – Muslim)   3) The blessed blood of the beloved Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) is Paak (pure). During the Battle of Uhud, the beloved Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) was wounded. Sayyiduna Malik bin Sunaan (radi Allahu anhu), the father of Sayyiduna Abu Saeed Khudri (radi Allahu anhu), began to suck out the blood from the wound of the beloved Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and it began to look white. The Sahaba asked him to spit it out. He refused to do so and said, "I swear by Allah that I will never spit this blood out of my mouth." He then drank the blessed blood of the Beloved Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). The Beloved Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, "Whichever one of you wishes to see a Jannati man, you should look at him (Hadrat Malik bin Sunaan)". (Shifa Shareef; Madarijun Nabuiwat)   4) The blessed perspiration of Sayyiduna Muhammad Mustapha (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) possessed a sweet smelling fragrance. Sayyiduna Umme Salim (radi Allahu anha), the mother of Sayyiduna Anas (radi Allahu anhu), said that the beloved Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) used to go to the house of Sayyiduna Umme Salim (radi Allahu anha) to make Qailula (rest after lunch). Sayyiduna Umme Salim (radi Allahu anha) used to lay for him a bedspread made from skin. He used to lie on that skin and he perspired very much. Sayyiduna Umme Salim (radi Allahu anha) used to collect the blessed perspiration of the beloved Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and mix it in perfume. The Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) asked, "O Umme Salim! What is this?" She said, "Ya Rasoolallah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam)! It is your blessed perspiration. I mix it in my perfume because your blessed perspiration is the best perfume amongst all perfumes." (Mishkaat Shareef; Bukhari Shareef)   5) The beloved Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: "I will intercede for my Ummah until my Creator summons me, 'O Muhammad Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam! Have you been pleased?' I will say, 'O my Creator! I am pleased?". (Durr Manthur; Roohul Bayaan)   6) It is reported by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said:"Indeed this entire world is in front of me so that I can observe everything in it. I can see everything in this world and everything that will take place till the Day of Qiyamah. I see the entire world as I see the palm of my hand". (Mawahib-e-Ladunnia)   7) On the Day of Qiyamah, all the people will congregate and they will say among themselves, "We wish we could find some one to intercede for us in the Court of Allah Ta'ala so that He may give us comfort at this point." They will go to Sayyiduna Adam (alaihis salaam) and ask him to intercede for them. He will tell them to go to Sayyiduna Nooh (alaihis salaam) as he is the first Nabi that Allah Ta'ala sent towards the people on earth.Sayyiduna Nooh (alaihis salaam) will tell them to go to Sayyiduna Ibrahim (alaihis salaam) as he is the Friend of Allah Ta'ala. He in turn will tell them to go to Sayyiduna Moosa (alaihis salaam) as he is a special servant of Allah Ta'ala. He will say to them to go to Sayyiduna 'Isa (alaihis salaam) as he is the special servant and Rasool of Allah Ta'ala, and His Kalma and His Rooh. The people will then present themselves before Hadrat 'Isa (alaihis salaam) who will say, "This is not my job. Go into the court of Sayyiduna Muhammad (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) who is a unique servant of Almighty Allah Ta'ala and it is through him that Almighty Allah has forgiven those before and after him." Then SARWAR-E-KONAIN (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, "They will come to me. I will ask for permission in the Court of Almighty Allah and permission will be granted. When I see Almighty Allah, I will make Sajdah and Almighty Allah will say, 'O Muhammad (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam)! Lift up your head, ask, request and it will be given, and intercession will be accepted'." (Bukhari Shareef; Ibn Majah)   8) SARWAR-E-KONAIN MUHAMMAD MUSTAFA MUJTABA(sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, "I am the one who distributes and Almighty Allah is the One who gives." (Bukhari; Umdatul Qari)   9) Hazrat Ubaada bin Saamit (radi Allahu anhu) reports that he heard the Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) saying, “That person who testifies that there is none worthy of worship except One Allah and Hazrat Muhammad (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) is the Chosen Prophet of Allah, Almighty Allah declares the fire of hell haraam upon him.” (Muslim-Mishkaat)   10) Hazrat Abu Musa (radi Allahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) said, "A time will come upon the people when a person will wander about with gold as Zakaat and will not find anybody to accept it, and one man will be seen followed by forty women to be their guardian because of scarceness of men and great number of women.” (Bukhari)   11) Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu) narrates that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, "For that person who reads a hundred Durood Shareefs on Jummah, then on the Day of Qiyamah, he will be accompanied by a Noor, whose intensity is so brilliant if it had to be distributed among the creation, it would serve all". (Dalaa'ilul Khayraat)   12) The Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) said, "One who hears my remembrance and does not send Durood upon me is the greatest miser." (Mishkaat)    13) Sayyiduna Ali Hameed Saaidi (radi Allahu anhu) has reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: "If any of you enters the Mosque, send Salaams to me, followed by this Du'a: 'O Allah! Open your Door of Blessing for me". (Abu Dawud, Ibne Majah, Baihaqi) This Hadith proves that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) is present in every Mosque of this world and according to Islam, the entire earth is a Mosque for the Muslims, as reported by Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (radi Allahu anhu) that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: "The entire earth has been made a Mosque for me". (Bukhari Shareef) Thus, the Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) is present everywhere on earth!   15) Sayyiduna Abi bin Ka'ab (radi Allahu anhu) reports that the GLORIOUS Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: "On the Day of Qiyamah, I will be the Leader and Khatib of all the Ambiya (alaihums salaam) and I will be the master of their intercession. I do not say this out of arrogance." (Mishkaat Shareef; Ash'atul Lam'aat)   16) Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) said, "Allah will not look on the Day of Judgment at him who drags his robe (behind him) out of pride." Abu Bakr said "One side of my robe slacks down unless I get very cautious about it." Allah's Apostle said, "But you do not do that with a pride." (Bukhari)   17) Hazrat Jaabir (radi Allahu anhu) reports that the Holy Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) said, “That person who has these three things in him will be granted a place under the shade of Allah’s Arsh (Throne) on the day on which there will be no shade except this. He, who makes wudhu even when it is difficult, goes by foot to the Musjid even in the dark and feeds the hungry. (Mishkaat)   18) "Those who are not kind and merciful on the mankind, then Allah is not kind and merciful to them as well.” (Sahih Bukhari & Muslim)   19) Hazrat Ali-e-Murtuza (radi Allahu anhu) states, "When the Beloved of Allah (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam)used to speak then Noor could be seen emerging from between his blessed teeth."(Mawahib)    20) Hazrat Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) said, "If a worldly person is given two jungles full of wealth, then he will still desire a third jungle of wealth and the stomach of such a (greedy) man will only be filled with the sand of the grave and nothing else." (Muslim)   21) Hazrat Anas bin Maalik (radi Allahu anhu) reports that the Holy Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) said, “That Namaaz which is performed in its appointed time, and the wudhu for it is completely correct and in the Namaaz there is humility and sincerity, and the Qiyaam (standing) and the Ruku and Sujood is done properly, then the Namaaz of that person comes out white and shining and says, ‘May Allah protect you like you have protected me and for those who read Namaaz in the incorrect time and who do not make proper wudhu and who not read with humility and who do not performt the Ruku and Sujood correctly, then his Namaaz comes out black and dark and says, ‘May Allah destroy you, like you have destroyed me’ Then when it reaches there where Allah Wills, it is wrapped up, just like how old clothes are wrapped and it is then thrown onto the face of that Namaazi.” (Tibrani)   22) Hazrat Bahr ibn Hakeem (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) said, "Anger destroys ones Imaan like aloe destroys honey." (Bahihaqi)   23) Hadrat Uthman bin Haniff (radi Allahu anhu) says that a blind man came to the court of the Beloved Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Pray for me that I may regain my sight." The Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, "Go and perform ablution and read two Raka'ats of Nafil Salaah and read this Du'a: 'O Allah! Verily I ask of You and towards You I use the mediation of Nabi-e-Rahmat, Muhammad Mustapha (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). O Muhammad! Verily I turn through your Wasila to Your Creator for my needs so that my needs may be fulfilled. O Allah, accept the intercession of Muhammad (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) for me". (Ibn Maja; Shifa Shareef)    24) Hazrat Anas (radi Allahu anhu) states, "The day on which Huzoor (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) arrived in Madinatul Munawwara every thing in Madinatul Munawwara became bright and radiant through his Noor." (Tirmizi Shareef)    25) Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) reported the Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) as saying, "If any one of you improves (follows strictly) his Islamic religion then his good deeds will be rewarded ten times to seven hundred times for each good deed and a bad deed will be recorded as it is." (Bukhari)   26) Food is a graciousness of Allah so do not waste it. Nothing should be left in the plate to be thrown off. (Muslim)   27) Hadrat Abu Huraira Radi Allahu anhu said: the beloved Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam was asked to curse the infidels. He said,"I have not been sent to curse people but as a mercy to all mankind." (Muslim)   28) The Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, “Whoever is pleased that Allah answers his prayers during hardships and difficulties, let him make much supplication in times of ease.”(Hasan, at-Tirmidhi)   29) Hadrat Ibn Abbas and Hadrat Jabir (Radi Allahu Ta'ala anhum) have narrated that "The first reward given to the believer in his grave is that all who attended his funeral are granted forgiveness and the believer is informed of it". (Baihaqi)   30) Hadrat Abu Hurayrah (Radi Allahu Ta'ala anhu) narrates that the Most Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu Ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam) said "That a Muslim has six claims over the Muslims, one of which is to accompany his funeral". (Muslim)   31) Hadrat Ali  'Sher-e-Khuda' (Radi Allahu Ta'ala anhu) has narrated that the Most Beloved Prophet of Allah, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa (Salla Allahu Ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam) said that whosoever buries a dead body, shrouds, perfumes, helps in lifting at the funeral, offers funeral prayers and at the same time refrains from mentioning his shortcomings to anyone, becomes so purified from sins, it was as if he is born presently. (Ibn Majah)   32) The best sadqa is that a muslim man learns knowlege [of the Deen] and then teaches it to his Muslim brothers. (Ibn-e-Majah)   33) Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (radi Allahu anhu) heard the Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) saying, When a servant accepts Islam and his Islam is good, then Allah shall forgive all his sins which he committed before accepting Islam, and reckoning will commence after this. For every good deed, he will be rewarded ten folds up to seventy folds and for every bad deed, he will have one sin. It can also be so, that Allah may pardon him.(Bukhari Shareef)   34) Hazrat Maalik bin Anas (radi Allahu anhu) reportes that the Holy Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) said, “I have left behind for you two such things, to which if you hold firmly, you shall never go astray. One is the Book of Allah (Quran) and the other the Sunnats of your Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) (i.e. Hadith). (Mishkaat)    35) The Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) collected all his companions in this place and delivered a brief sermon. After praising and Glorifying the Lord he(sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said " 0 People I am a mortal. Possibly, Allah's angel may come and I have to accept (his message i.e. death). I leave behind you two weighty things. First of them is the Book of Allah(Quran Shareef) in which is guidance and light. Hold the Book of Allah firmly. Second is my Ahlul Bait, I remind you of Allah through my Ahlul Bait."He repeated the last statement thrice This is a tradition from Sahih Muslim in the chapter of Manaqeb Hazrat Ali (alaih salaam), Nisaai, Musnad-e- Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Tirmidhi, Tabarani, Haakim-e-Neshapouri etc. have some more sentences too in which the glorification of Hazrat Ali (alaih salaam) are quite evident. In these traditions one sentence is quite common and that is :- "Man Kunto Maula Fahaza Ali Maula" meaning " Of  whomsoever I am his Master, Ali is His Master. 0 Allah, help him who helps Ali and be his enemy who is Ali's enemy". Clear explanation in the traditions are not found as to what was the necessity for these statements. In Sahih-e-Bukhari, it is mentioned that Hazrat Ali (alaih salaam) was sent to Yemen during this time and on his return, participated in the Haj journey. There, in Yemen, he did something on his own authority which was not liked by some of his co-travellers One of them on returning, complained to the Holy Prophet about Ali's (alaih salaam) action. The Holy Prophet replied that Ali (alaih salaam) had the right to do more than this. It's not surprising that to dispel such doubts, the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) uttered these statements.(Seeratun Nabi, Vol. 1)   36) Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) reports that the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, "The example of myself and the Nabis before me, is like the example of a person who built a house. He built the house very beautifully, but he left out a brick in one corner of the building. People walk around the house and are astonished why the one brick has not been put in." The Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, "I am that brick (example) and I am the Final Nabi (Khatimun Nabiyyeen)."(Bukhari Shareef)   37) "The reward of deeds depends on intentions..." (Bukhari & Muslim)   38) Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "Recite the Qur'aan. For on the Day of Resurrection, it shall come as an intercessor for its companion." (Muslim)   39) On the authority of Zayd ibn Arqam( radhiallaahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allaah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam used to say, "O Allaah, I seek refuge in you from knowledge which does not benefit, from a heart which does not feel humble, from a soul that does not feel contended and from an invocation that is not answered." (Muslim)   40) The beloved sahabi of Huzoor Pur Noor (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) Hadrat Anas (radi Allahu Anhu states,"The day on which Huzoor (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) arrived in Madinatul Munawwara then through his noor every thing in Madinatul Munawwara became bright." (Hasan)]   42) The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam said: "Affliction caused by the tongue is worse than (that caused by) the strike of the blade of a sword."   43) Hadhrat Ibn Mas'ood (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Muhammad(sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "Unite Hajj and Umrah (during Hajj period). Both (acts of Ibaadat) eliminate poverty and sins in a similar way in which the impurities of gold, silver and iron are eliminated. The reward of Hajj which was performed correctly is nothing other that Jannat." (Mishkaat)   44) Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, "Almighty Allah has not created any sickness for which he has not sent down the cure (medicine)." (Bukhari Shareef)   45) Love for the Prophet(sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) should be more than one’s love for himself, his children, family and worldly possessions. The Prophet said, what translated means: "None of you will reach belief till I become dearer to him than his children, parents and all humans." (Al-Bukhari & Muslim)   46) I shall be his intercessor on the day of Qiyaamah, for him, who comes to me with the sole intention of making my ziyaarat alone and nothing else has brought him here.(Daar)   47) “O people, you must be calm, for rush and hurrying is not righteousness.” (Al Bukhari )   48) Imam Bukhari (rahmatullah alaihi) narrates that the Holy Prophet(sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said that ALLAH says,"My servant comes nearer to me by nafl worships upto this that I begin to love him and when I love him I become his ear by which he listens and I become his eyes by which he sees. (Saheehul Bukhari)   49) Hazrat Saeed Bin Museeb Radi Allahu anhu says that when the Yazidi forces plundered Madinah after the tragedy in Karbala, azan or Salaah did not take place in Masjid Nabwi for three days. He was near the Qabr-e-Anwar of holy prophet(sal-lal-laho-tala-alaihi-wasalm) for three days and had no idea when it was prayer time except for the fact that he heard the Azan come from the Qabr-e-Anwar.(Mishkat Sharif)    50) Imam Muslim in his Saheeh and other scholars in their books narrate that the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) says,"When ALLAH Almighty loves a person so he calls Jabrail alaihis salam and says that O Jabrail I love my so and so servant you also love him.Hence Jabrail alaihis salam also loves him. Then Jabrail alaihis salam announces in the skies that ALLAH loves his so and so servant you also love him than all of the dwellers of skies love him. Then he is made beloved among the dwellers of the earth".   51) The Prophet Muhammad (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) has declared:Fear Allah regarding women. Verily, you have married them with the trust of Allah, they have rights over you in respect of their food, clothing and lodging. (Bukhari)   52) Hazrat Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) states, "Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) told me, "Say Bismillah, Eat with your right hand and eat of that which is before you." (Bukhari)   53) The Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) said, "One who recites Durood upon me fifty times daily will be blessed with this blessing, that I will make musafaha (shake hands) with him on the day of Qiyaamat.(Al Qaulul Badi’)   54) Hazrat Sahl ibn Sa`ad (radi Allahu anhu) narrates: The Beloved Rasool (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) came out and met Abu Talha. The latter rose and went to him saying: "My father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Rasoolullah (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam)! I see joy and delight in your expression?" The Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) said: "Yes, for Jibraeel (alaihis salaam) has just come to me saying: O Muhammad (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) , whoever among your Community invokes blessings upon you once, Allah records for Him ten meritorious deeds, erases from his register ten evil deeds, and raises him ten degrees because of it." (Al-Sakhawi)   55) It is on the authority of Hazrat Amr bin Shuaib (radi Allahu anhu), who narrated from his father who narrated from his father that the Prophet (sall Allaho alaihi wasallam) is reported to have said, "Eat, drink, give sadqa and dress up, as long as there is no wasting and pride in what you do." (Ibn Majah)   56) Nabi Muhammad (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, "When you meet a Haji, then first convey upon him your salaams and after doing so, make musafaha and Muaanaqa with him and request of him to make dua for your forgiveness before he enters your home, for he has been forgiven." (Muatta Imam Ahmad)   57) Narrated 'Anas (Razi Allah ho Anho) : The fact which stops me from narrating a great number of Ahadith to you is that the prophet (Sal Allah ho Alaihi Wasallam) said, "Whoever tells a lie against me intentionally, then (surely) let him occupy his seat inn Hell-fire." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 108, Vol. 1)   58) Hadrat Ali (Radi Allahu ta'ala anhu) narrates ''once Rasulullah (Salla Allahu ta'ala alayhi wa Sallam) and I journeyed from Makkah, and every tree and stone that we passed said aloud, ''Assalaamu alaika Ya Rasulullah! And indeed many lead astray by their own desires, out of ignorance; indeed your Lord well knows the transgressors. [Ana`am 6:120] And give up the open and hidden sins; those who earn sins will soon receive the punishment of their earnings. [Ana`am 6:121] And do not eat that on which Allah’s name has not been mentioned, and indeed that is disobedience; and undoubtedly the devils inspire in the hearts of their friends to fight with you; and if you obey them, you are then polytheists. (kanzul-Ieman)   Surah Al-Anaam So eat of that (meat) on which Allâh's Name has been pronounced (while slaughtering the animal), if you are believers in His Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) (118) And why should you not eat of that (meat) on which Allâh's Name has been pronounced (at the time of slaughtering the animal), while He has explained to you in detail what is forbidden to you, except under compulsion of necessity? And surely many do lead (mankind) astray by their own desires through lack of knowledge. Certainly your Lord knows best the transgressors (119) Leave (O mankind, all kinds of) sin, open and secret. Verily, those who commit sin will get due recompense for that which they used to commit (120) Eat not (O believers) of that (meat) on which Allâh's Name has not been pronounced (at the time of the slaughtering of the animal), for sure it is Fisq (a sin and disobedience of Allâh). And certainly, the Shayâtin (devils) do inspire their friends (from mankind) to dispute with you, and if you obey them[] [by making Al¬Maitah (a dead animal) legal by eating it], then you would indeed be Mushrikûn (polytheists) [because they (devils and their friends) made lawful to you to eat that which Allâh has made unlawful to eat and you obeyed them by considering it lawful to eat, and by doing so you worshipped them, and to worship others besides Allâh is polytheism]. Then he ".is written, in Allah's sight, among the liars             The first stage of purification - Purification of the seven organs of the body In the first stage one tries to purify the seven organs of the body. With these organs people do good deeds or bad deeds. 1) Tongue 2) Eyes 3) Hands 4) Ears 5) Feet 6) Private parts 7) Stomach When one commits a sin with any one of these organs then a black spot appears on the heart. If that person does not repent then slowly the whole heart becomes darkened and then that person fails to differentiate between the truth, falsehood, good and bad thus the heart becomes blind. The method to purify these organs is that a person should start to purify one organ at a time. If he can simultaneously save all seven organs from committing sins then he should start the second stage of the path, which is purification of the mind.   Second Stage of the Tareeq Purification of the Mind   Third Stage of the Tareeq Purification of Heart and Soul   Fourth Stage of the Tareeq Illumination of the Soul       A BASIC GUIDE TO FIQH FOR PURIFICATION (TAHARAH, WUZU, GHUSL) AND SALAH (FIVE TIMES PRAYERS)   In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate, Praise be to Allah, Lord of all the Worlds       THE JOURNEY OF THE HUMAN SOUL‘ADM (In other words there was nothing in existence apart from Allah) PLEASE CLICK THE LINKS:   PLEASE CLICK THE LINK: TO Download Tariqah-Muhammadiyyah-English:   PLEASE CLICK THE LINK: TO Download Tareeqh Muhammadyah  (Urdu):   PLEASE CLICK THE LINK FOR MORE INFORMATION:

The hadith summarize the essential teachings of Islam, concentrating on the following areas: affirmation of the doctrine of tawhid and understanding Allah (swt) in all His attributes, the significance of the five pillars of Islam, attainment of virtue, self-sacrifice for the cause of Allah (swt) and preparation for the day of judgement. The Hadith Qudsi, or sacred hadith, have a particularly important status because their meaning is entirely from Allah (swt) while the wording is that of the Prophet Muhammad (s) himself. For each of the eighty hadith presented, the Arabic original has been printed alongside the English translation, which has earned a reputation for its scholastic accuracy and readability Among the many definitions given by the early scholars to Sacred Hadith is that of as-Sayyid ash-Sharif al-Jurjani (died in 816 A.H.) in his lexicon At-Tarifat where he says: "A Sacred Hadith is, as to the meaning, from Allah the Almighty; as to the wording, it is from the messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). It is that which Allah the Almighty has communicated to His Prophet through revelation or in dream, and he, peace be upon him, has communicated it in his own words." The hadith qudsi are the sayings of the Prophet divinely communicated to him. The present collection has been compiled from all the available books of hadith. The forty chosen here are all well authenticated and present many of the doctrinal, devotional and ethical elements of Islam. [The Above taken from : An introduction to the subject and select sample texts, see e.g. Ibrahim Izzuddin and Denis Johnson-Davies: Forty Hadith Qudsi, Beirut, Damascus, 1980.] Note: While the common factor between hadith qudsi and the Qur'an is that both contain words from Allah which have been revealed to Muhammad, the main points of difference between Qur'an and hadith qudsi are as follows: In the Qur'an the precise wording is from Allah, while in the hadith qudsi the wording is given by the Prophet Muhammad. The Qur'an has been brought to Muhammad only by the Angel Gabriel, while hadith qudsi may also have been inspired otherwise, such as e.g. in a dream. The Qur'an is inimitable and unique, but not so the hadith qudsi. The Qur'an has been transmitted by numerous persons, (tawatur) but the hadith and hadith qudsi often only by a few or even one individual. There are hadith qudsi which are sahth, but also others hasan, or even da'if, while there is no doubt at all about any aya from the Qur'an. Another point is that a hadith qudsi cannot be recited in prayer. The Witr Prayer   The Ruling on "Witr" prayer       For the easy understanding of readers this following article shall be divided into following 5 parts and then they shall be explained in detail   A) Importance + Legal status of the prayer itself B) It’s number of rakats C) Witr is prayed like Maghrib with one salutation in last Rakat. D) Saying Qunoot before going in Ruku of Third Rakat.E) For how Long does it’s time last? Let us start with the Importance + Legal status of this prayer according to Shariah. The ahnaaf are special in considering the witr prayer as “Wajib (necessary)” whereas the La-Madhabiyyah either consider it as Sunnat-e-Mu’akdah or Nafl prayer (Note: All 4 valid schools remain correct even if they differ with one another whereas the La-Madhabiyyah sect even if it reaches a right opinion they would still be Ahlul Bidah as they are not following a sound school of jurisprudence at first place.) The stance of Ahnaaf is most strict in regards to following Sunnah. Translation: Narrated by Abu Ayyub who narrated from the Prophet (Peace be upon him) who said: Witr is a "RIGHT (HAQQ)" upon you which is “WAJIB”. [Sunnan Daraqutni, Hadith # 1617] Comment: This hadith has an absolutely Sahih Chain and even if Imam Daraqutni said that word “WAJIB” is not Mahfuz it does not matter because the hadith also contains the wording “HAQQ” which proves witr to be Wajib too.Regarding the chain of this hadith Allama Muhammad Shams ul Haq AzeemAbadi said: All narrators of this hadith are “THIQA” Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani (rah) said that this hadith has been narrated by Abu Dawud, Nasai’i and Daraqutni in his Ilal. Imam Bayhaqi and some other Muhaditheen have said that this hadith is “Mawquf” and this is correct [At-Taleeq Mughni ala Daraqutni (2/23)]Please refer to the Rakat section for more details about the most sound opinion in regards to Rakahs in Witr. Translation: Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib: I heard the Apostle of Allah (Peace be upon him) say: The Witr is a duty, so he who does not observe it does not belong to us; the witr is a duty, so he who does not observe it does not belong to us; the witr is a duty, so he who does not observe it does not belong to us. [Sunnan Abu Dawud, Book 8, Hadith # 1414, Online Version]This hadith is also authentic because Sukoot (silence) of Imam Abu Dawud (rah) itself proves authenticity of the hadith as Imam Abu Dawud (rah) said: Whatever Hadith there is in my book that has a severe weakness, then I have clarified it, and whatever I did not mention anything about it, then “IT IS SALIH (UPRIGHT)” and some of them are more correct than others [Sunnan Abu Dawud, Volume No.1, Page No. 23, Dar us-Salaam version] Comment: Having said that we consider it necessary to tell that one narrator i.e. “Ubayd Ullah bin Abdullah al-Atki” has been called weak by some Muhaditheen but the overwhelming Majority have done Tadeel over him [Refer to Tahdhib ut Tahdhib of Ibn Hajr for more details]       Proof # 3حدثنا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ وَ قُتَيْبَةُ بنُ سَعِيدٍ المَعْنَى قالا أخبرنا اللَّيْثُ عن يَزِيدَ بنِ أبي حَبيبٍ عن عَبْدِ الله بنِ رَاشِدٍ الزَّوْفِيِّ عن عَبْدِ الله بنِ أبي مُرَّةَ الزَّوْفِيِّ عن خَارِجَةَ بنِ حُذَافَةَ قال أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الْعَدَوِيّ ، قال: «خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلّم فَقَالَ: إِنَّ الله تَعَالَىَ قَدْ أَمَدَّكُمْ بِصَلاَةٍ وَهي خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ مِنْ حُمْرِ النَّعَمِ وَهي الْوِتْرُ فَجَعَلَهَا لَكُم فَيما بَيْنَ الْعِشَاءِ إِلَى طُلوعِ الْفَجْرِ Translation: Narrated Kharijah ibn Hudhafah al-Adawi: The Apostle of Allah (Peace be upon him) came out to us and said: Allah the Exalted has given you "AN EXTRA PRAYER" which is better for you then the red camels (i.e. high breed camels). This is the witr which Allah has appointed for you between the night prayer and the daybreak. [Sunnan Abu Dawud, Book 8, Number 141]Again Imam Abu Dawud has done Sukoot over this hadith which proves that he considered it authentic. Above all the ahadith proving witr to be Wajib have now become Ghair Wahid and chance of them being weak is eliminated. Translation: Narrated AbuSa'id al-Khudri: The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: If anyone oversleeps and misses the witr, or forgets it, "HE SHOULD PRAY WHEN HE REMEMBERS" [Abu Dawud: Hadith # 1426] Comment: This hadith also proves Witr to be Wajib because “Qadha” is only done of Fardh and Wajib prayers not Nawafil. Translation: Hadrat Ibn Umar (ra) narrates that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: Allah has “INCREASED ONE PRAYER FOR YOU” and you should guard it. This prayer is the “WITR PRAYER” [Musnad Ahmed bin Hanbal, Hadith # 6919]This hadith is “Hasan li Ghayri” as said by Allama Shu’ayb al Ara’noot [Musnad Ahmed (2/205)]Above all the hadith # 4 & 5 have many other corroborating proofs which strengthen them.   B) The Number of Rakats in Witr Salaat   According to the Hanafi school of jurisprudence which is the most dominant and widely followed school throughout the Muslim world, the number of Rakats in Witr are “Three (3)”. Here are some of the many proofs which establish that minimum rakats of Witr are Three   Proof # 1Narrated Abu Salama bin 'Abdur-Rahman: That he asked 'Aisha "How was the prayer of Allah's Apostle in the month of Ramadan?" She replied, "He used not to pray more than eleven Rakat whether in Ramadan or in any other month. He used to offer four Rakat, let alone their beauty and length, and then four Rakat, let alone their beauty and length. "AFTERWARDS HE WOULD OFFER THREE RAKAT"...[Volume 4, Book 56, Number 769: (Sahih Bukhari)]The Hadith of Aisha (ra) is also narrated in Muwatta Imam Malik with wording of “THREE” [Refer to Book 7, Number 7.2.9: Muwatta Imam Malik]Comment: This hadith talks about throughout the year and thus witr remains 3 throughout the year.   Proof # 2'Abdullah b. 'Abbas reported: He spent (one night) in the house of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). He (the Holy Prophet) got up, brushed his teeth and performed ablution and said:" In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, there are indeed signs for people of understanding" (al-Qur'an, iii. 190), to the end of the Surah. He then stood up and prayed two rak'ahs, standing, bowing and prostrating himself at length in them. Then he finished, went to sleep and snored. He did that three times, six rak'ahs altogether, each time cleaning his teeth, performing ablution, and reciting these verses. "THEN HE OBSERVED THREE RAK'AHS OF WITR"... [Book 004, Number 1682: (Sahih Muslim)]     Proof # 3Abdul Aziz bin Jarih (ra) narrates that he asked Aisha (ra) about what the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) used to recite in Witr, she replied: He used to recite in the “First rakaat”:” سبح اسم ربك الأعلى” and in the “Second rakaat” “قل يا أيها الكافرون” and in the ”Third rakaat” “قل هو الله أحد” or he used to recite (any) of the Muudithayn (i.e. Al Falaq and An Naas) [Sunnah Tirmidhi, Volume No. 2, Hadith # 463 – Imam Tirimdhi declared this hadith as “Hassan”] Proof # 4 Ibrahim al-Nakhai said that Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra) said: I would not readily give up praying Witr with “Three rakahs” not even in exchange for the red hided cattle[Muwatta Imam Muhammad, Page No. 127, Turath Publishing]   Proof # 5 Muhammad said: “Yaqub Ibn Ibrahim informed us, Husayb Ibn Ibrahim informed us that Ibn Masud (ra) said: “NEVER DID A SINGLE RAKAH SUFFICE” [Muwatta Imam Muhammad, Page No. 128]   Proof # 6Ibrahim al-Nakhai said that Alqamah said: Abdullah Ibn Masud (ra) informed us “The least that Witr can be is three rakahs” [Ibid, Pg. 128] Proof # 7These are also narrated in Majma Az Zawaid with reference to Tabarani, Imam Haythami declared the chain to be “Hassan” [Majma Al Zawaid, Volume No. 2, Page No. 249] Proof # 8Abu Sa’eed al Khudri (rah) narrates that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) has forbidden to pray “Al-Batra” which means that a person praying 1 rakat of Witr. [Imam al Zayli in Nasb al Raya (2/120)]Comment: One narrator of this hadith i.e.Usman bin Muhammad bin Rabi’i has been declared weak by Imam al-Uqayli (rah), however Imam Turkamani (rah) said:وفي سنده عثمان بن محمد بن ربيعة قال العقيلي الغالب على حديثه الوهم ذكره صاحب التمهيد ولم يتكلم عليه احد بشئ فيما علمنا غير العقيلي وكلامه خفيف وقد اخرج له الحاكم في المستدرك.Translation: In this chain is present Uthman bin Muhammad bin Rabi’i, al-Uqayli said: He gets “Wahm” in hadith and this is mentioned by author of at-Tamheed. However “NONE OF THE ULAMA IN PAST HAVE DONE JIRAH ON HIM EXCPET UQAYLI AND EVEN HIS JIRAH IS MINOR” Hakim has narrated from him in his Mustadrak [Jawhar al Naqi in chapter of: Rakats in Witr]Even if this specific hadith is considered weak still it is corroborated by many other ahadith which makes it Sahih/Hasah li Ghayri. Here let us show you another hadith. Proof # 9وعن حصينٍ قالَ: بلغَ ابنَ مسعودٍ أَنَّ سَعْداً يُوتِرُ بركْعَةٍ قالَ: «ما أَجْزَأَتْ ركعةٌ قَطُّ».رواه الطبراني في الكبير، وحصين لم يدرك ابن مسعود، وإسناده حسن.Translation: Hussain (rah) said that Ibn Masud (ra) found out that Sa’d (ra) prays one Rakat witr, Ibn Masud (RA) said: I do not consider 1 Rakat as enough (for prayer)This hadith is narrated by Tabarani in his al-Kabeer, Hussain has not seen Ibn Masud (ra) and “THE CHAIN IS HASAN” [Majma al Zawaid (2/504)]Comment: Someone might wonder that when Hussain has not seen Ibn Masud then howocme Imam al-Haythami (rah) declared the chain as “Hasan” the answer is that Muhaditheen do not only look at one chain when passing a ruling, they have in consideration many other chains due to which they declare some hadith as Hasan or even Sahih. Hence It is proven from Multiply narrated and Sahih/Hassan ahadith that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) used to pray 3 Rakat Witr and Sahaba endorced that 1 Rakat of prayer is not enough. Witr is prayed like "MAGHRIB"   C) Now let me come towards another important issue of how to conclude the Witr prayer i.e. when to say salutation, whether after second rakat or after last third rakat.     Proof # 1Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Dinar that Abdullah ibn Umar used to say, "The maghrib prayer is the witr of the daytime prayers. ["Book 7, Number 7.3.22: (Muwatta Imam Malik)]Comment: This hadith proves without any shadow of doubt that Witr has to be prayed just like Maghrib prayer, in Maghrib we do not say salutation in-between rather we say it in the end of third rakat. Proof # 2Imam Muhammad after narrating this hadith said: We adhere to this. Whoever makes Maghrib with the Witr of daytime prayer as Ibn Umar (ra) said, should make the Witr of the night-time prayer the like of it, not separating the two [the set of two rakahs from the single rakah] by saying As-Salamu Alaykum in-between. This is the verdict of Abu Hanifa, may Allah have mercy on him [Muwatta Imam Muhammad, Page No. 124]     Proof # 3Imam Muhammad made a whole chapter on “Saying as-Salamu Alaykum in Witr and brought under it these ahadithAbu Ubaydah said: Abdullah Ibn Masud said: Witr is “Three” like the “Three” of Maghrib [Muwatta Imam Muhammad, Page No. 127]   Proof # 4From Ata that Ibn Abbas (ra) said: Witr is like the prayer of Maghrib [Muwatta Imam Muhammad, Page No. 128, Hadith # 263]     Salutation is only made in the Last Rakat   Proof # 5 Imam Muhammad also narrated another hadith from Aisha (ra) that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) used not to say As Salamu alaykum after two rakahs [Muwatta Imam Muhammad, Page No. 128, Hadith # 263]     Proof # 6أنبأ يحيى بن موسى البلخي قال حدثنا عبد العزيز بن خالد قال حدثنا سعيد بن أبي عروبة عن قتادة عن عزرة عن سعيد بن عبد الرحمن بن أبزى عن أبيه عن أبي بن كعب قال كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقرأ في الوتر بسبح اسم ربك الأعلى وفي الركعة الثانية بقل يا أيها الكافرون وفي الثالثة بقل هو الله أحد ولا يسلم إلا في آخرهنTranslation: It was narrated that Ubayy bin Ka’b (RA) said: "The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) used to recite: “Glorify the Name of your Lord the Most High (Al-A’La: 87):” in Witr, in the second Rakah he would recite: “Say: O you disbelievers! (Al-Kafiroon:109)”, and in the third “Say: He is Allah, (the) One (Al-Ikhlas:112). And "HE ONLY SAID THE TASLIM AT THE END" and he would say – meaning after the Taslim: ‘Subhanal-Malikil-Quddus (Glory be to the sovereign, the Most Holy)’ three times.”[Sunnan Nasai’i, Hadith # 1702]     Proof # 7أَخْبَرَنَا إسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: أخبرنا بِشْرُ ـ يعني ابْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ ـ قَالَ: أخبرنا سَعِيدٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ ، حَدَّثَتْهُ: «أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَانَ لاَ يُسَلِّمُ فِي رَكْعَتَيِ الْوَتْرِ».Translation: It was narrated from Saad bin Hisham that Aishah (RA) told him: “The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) would not say the salutation in the second Rakat of Witr [Sunnan Nasai’i, Hadith # 1699]Regarding this hadith Imam al-Nawawi (rah) inspite of being a Shafi’i said: Qunoot is recited "Before going in Ruku"حديث عائشة رضي الله عنها «أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلّم لا يسلم في ركعتي الوتر» رواه النسائي بإسناد حسن، ورواه البيهقي في «السنن الكبيرة» بإسناد صحيحTranslation: The hadith of Aisha (ra) from the Prophet (Peace be upon him) that he would not say the salutation in the second Rakat of Witr is narrated by Imam al-Nasai’i with “HASAN CHAIN” and Imam al-Bayhaqi (rah) in his Sunnan al-Kabeer with “SAHIH CHAIN” [Al Majmu (4/23)]     Proof # 8حدّثنا حفص عن عمرو عن الحسن قال: أجمع المسلمون عن أن الوتر ثلاث لا يسلّم إلا في آخرهن.Translation: Imam Hasan al-Basri (rah) said: There is “IJMA (CONSENSUS)” of the Muslims that witr consists of 3 Rakahs and Salaam is said “AT THE END (NOT MIDDLE)” [Musannad Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/194)]These overwhelming routes prove beyond any shadow of doubt that Witr is prayed like Maghrib and Salutation is only given in the last rakat.     D) Now here is proof that Qunoot is said in Witr before going in Ruku of Third RakatProof # 1Hadith: Ubay bin Ka’b (ra) narrates that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) used to recite the Qunoot of Witr “BEFORE GOING IN RUKU” [Sunnan Abu Dawud under Hadith # 1428]     Proof # 2واختلف أهل العلم في القنوت في الوتر فرأى عبد الله بن مسعود القنوت في الوتر في السنة كلها واختار القنوت قبل الركوع وهو قول بعض أهل العلم وبه يقول سفيان الثوري وابن المبارك وإسحاق وأهل الكوفةTranslation: The people of knowledge have differed about Qunoot in Witr. Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (R.A) said that the Qunoot must be recited throughout the year "AND IT IS RECITED BEFORE GOING IN RUKU" This is what some other ulama including Sufyan Thawri, Ibn Mubarak, Ishaq and the people of Kufah have also said. Translation: Ibn Umar (RA) used to recite the Qunoot in Witr before going in Ruku [Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/201)]Many other Sahaba are also proven to have recited Qunoot of Witr before going in Ruku.   E) The timing of Witr prayer:The timing of Witr prayer lasts from the time of Isha till before Fajr Adhaan is said. Here are proofs over it.Proof # 1 Narrated 'Aisha: Allah's Apostle offered Witr prayer at different nights at various hours extending (from the 'Isha' prayer) up to the last hour of the night. [Volume 2, Book 16, Number 110: (Sahih Bukhari)]   Proof # 2Narrated Abu Qatadah: The Prophet (Peace be upon him) asked Abu Bakr: When do you observe the witr? He replied: I observe the witr prayer in the early hours of the night. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) asked Umar: When do you observe the witr? He replied: At the end of the night. He then said to Abu Bakr: This has followed it with care; and he said to Umar: He has followed it with strength. [Book 8, Number 1429: (Abu Dawood)]
